Zero Waste Valet
Scraps' groundbreaking program at Denver International Airport
Scraps + Denver International Airport Zero Waste Valet Program
maximizing waste diversion in the state's largest economic driver
The Denver International Airport (DEN) has an ambitious goal to become the most sustainable airport in the world. Though DEN has made tremendous strides in renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and other areas of environmental significance, the airport’s waste diversion rate has continued to stubbornly hover around 20%. Waste studies at the airport have shown, however, that 60% of what has typically been sent to landfill is recyclable or compostable, and that there’s a 30% contamination rate in the recycling stream.
But with the groundbreaking Zero Waste Valet program, run by Scraps, DEN is changing this paradigm.
In 2024, Scraps partnered with DEN to pilot a first-of-its-kind Zero Waste Valet (ZWV) program on Concourse B. This concept had never before been tested in the aviation industry. Through operational innovation, real-time data tracking, and direct concession engagement, by early 2026 the pilot has successfully increased the airport’s diversion rate from 20% to 25% while reducing contamination and improving concession participation.
Scraps is the only company that has successfully designed, implemented, and operationalized a Zero Waste Valet model at scale within a live airport environment.
Following the success of the pilot program, DEN has approved the expansion of the Zero Waste Valet program across all three concourses and the main terminal. With full implementation, the program is projected to divert significantly more material from landfill and position DEN as a national leader in airport waste diversion.
Beginning in 2027, this project will no longer be a pilot — it will become a full-scale operational transformation of airport waste systems.
Scraps and DEN have established a three-year strategic goal to increase diversion rates from 25% to 40% through full-airport deployment, contamination reduction, operational efficiencies, and concession engagement.
Now in its third year, the Zero Waste Valet team has already diverted more than 600 TONS / 1.2 MILLION pounds of compostables & recyclables from the landfill, now at a rate of more than 50 tons / 100,000 pounds per month and growing. Our team’s work has helped the airport achieve a diversion milestone of 27%, its highest diversion rate since it began tracking waste in 2009.
Scraps is thrilled to enter the 2026 year with fantastic results, a solid team & many lessons learned along the way, and to continue to lay the groundwork for a new paradigm of waste diversion for our state’s largest economic driver.
We are hopeful for the promise of working with DEN in 2027 onward, and continuing this program’s success long into the future.
