thinking you might "leave your leaves" this season?

While we love partnering with your city to keep your leaves out of the landfill, we really love it when folks leave their leaves and other end-of-season vegetation on the landscape!

Leaves are free, natural mulch that protect and insulate your soil and plant roots during the cold months, and help suppress weeds into your next growing season. Leaving leaves not only helps retain moisture and warmth; it also enriches your soil with slow-release nutrients as the leaves decompose throughout the fall and into the winter. This is especially important if you’re hoping your perennials return healthy & strong in the springtime!

Leaves also support beneficial insects, pollinators & other wildlife that rely on leaf litter for habitat and food throughout the winter months as well, supporting the overall biology of your local environment.

Can your eyes handle a “messy garden” throughout the winter? Leaving your dead, disease-free perennial plants in your garden can also help support your plant & soil health into the springtime! After you’ve saved your seeds and taken your cuttings for your annual plants (this includes your tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables), be sure to remove your annuals after a hard frost, to prevent any rot or disease from carrying over into next season.

Leaving your (disease-free) perennials, however, provides many of the same benefits as leaving your leaves! Be sure to give your perennials a deep watering before Colorado’s dry, cold winter. You could even try planting some cover crops, for additional winter protection and a robust spring season!
