Keeping compostables out of the landfill also means avoiding greenhouse gas emissions. That’s because organic matter in a landfill produces methane, a potent GHG that can be 80 times as powerful as carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping gas. Landfills are the third largest source of methane in the U.S.
By composting with Scraps instead of throwing their compostables in the trash, our members have helped keep multiple metric tons of GHGs out of our atmosphere:
